The NES’ most iconic titles include classics like Super Mario Brothers and The Legend of Zelda, which are firmly cemented as the cornerstones of many people’s youth. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, the NES reinvigorated the gamer base and introduced a wave of iconic characters that live on to this very day. In 1985, Nintendo released the Nintendo Entertainment System, a cool box-shaped console with intuitive controls and - more importantly - fantastic games. In turn, scores of new developers entered the industry, releasing new games at breakneck speed. Well, Atari’s 2600 console had made video game creation much more accessible, with friendly licensing terms and cartridge-based functionality. The industry titans of the time were falling like dominoes as consumers stopped buying new games and investors pulled out. It was 1983, and the future of video games looked bleak. Games like Metal Slug come to mind when I think of a good side-scroller, and I think if Shatterhand were to get a reboot, a much needed co-op experience would benefit it greatly. I miss the days of plowing through a side-scroller multiple times over simply because there is usually so much going on that you’ve probably miss all the little things that make them great. Side-scrolling action games are few and far between these days, and that’s really a shame.

We here at Hey Poor Player were browsing through our 8-bit carts and couldn’t help but wonder what happened to the NES games that decided just one was enough? In today’s video game market, even if a game is critically panned ( The Order 1886) a sequel would be in the works before players even put the disc inside their console. Nintendo’s NES library is bursting at the seams with substantial games that have withstood the test of time, many of which have have even evolved into major franchises that still produce sequels to this day.
